About the Orchestra
Since 1987, the Charlottesville High School Orchestra has won top prizes in music festivals in New York City (three times) Chicago, Atlanta (twice), Boston (twice), Williamsburg, Virginia Beach (twice), Orlando, Dallas, and Myrtle Beach (four times) and has performed by invitation at five VMEA conferences. The Orchestra earned a standing ovation for its performance at the opening concert of the 1994 Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Traveling for 10 days in Europe in 1998, the Orchestra placed second in the 27th Annual Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria, and presented concerts in Hallstatt, Vienna, and Prague, Czech Republic. To date, the Orchestra's three compilation CDs, "Live!," "Take 2," and "At Last" have grossed more than $50,000 in sales. In September 2001, the CHS Orchestra program and its director were featured in Southern Living magazine and on NPR's Performance Today.

The CHS Orchestra program consists of the String Ensemble, Concert Orchestra, and Chamber Music program. Composed of 48 10th-12th grade string players, the String Ensemble is the most advanced of the three. The Concert Orchestra, largest of the three ensembles, is made up of all ninth grade string players with at least two years of experience, as well as many upperclassmen. The Chamber Music program, new this year, will help students further hone their individual musicianship and ensemble skills. The CHS Symphony Orchestra is created for one concert each year by combining the top members of the CHS Wind Ensemble with the CHS Strings.
