To Weep with those who Weep: Mourning Practices in Litchfield

This exhibit will showcase the history of mourning in Litchfield, as it relates to the Female Academy students, its curriculum, and the community.

Mourning practices of the 19th century were largely affected by the death of George Washington. Memorial portraits, poetry, music, and art dedicated to his memory promoted the new fashion for mourning in the young republic, and this trend was adopted by the Litchfield Female Academy. This exhibit will showcase the history of mourning in Litchfield, as it relates to the Female Academy students, its curriculum, and the community.
